Location Scouting 101: What I Look For Before a Shoot
Behind every beautiful brand photo is a thoughtfully chosen location, and picking the right one is a big part of my creative process. Whether I’m shooting a lifestyle inspired product session or a full brand shoot, location plays a huge role in setting the tone, telling the story, and elevating the final images.
Here’s a peek behind the curtain at what I’m looking for when scouting the perfect spot for a brand photography session:
1. Lighting, Lighting, Lighting
Natural light is my best friend! I always look for locations with soft, even light, big windows, open shade, or dreamy golden hour sun. Harsh midday light or patchy shadows can be tricky, so I consider what time of day will best complement the location. Not to mention dark interior spaces with limited windows!
Pro tip: If we’re shooting indoors, I’ll often ask for videos of the space around the same time we plan to shoot to see exactly how the light behaves in the space.
2. Aesthetic Match
Your location should reflect your brand personality. I’m constantly asking:
– Does this space feel like you?
– Do the textures, colours, and vibe support your brand story?
– Is it light and airy, moody and bold, coastal and relaxed?
A minimalist modern kitchen might be perfect for a wellness coach, while a cozy, lived-in living room may suit a family-focused business.
3. Neutral (but not boring) Backdrops
I look for clean, clutter-free areas that don’t distract from you or your product. Neutral doesn’t mean boring, white shiplap, exposed brick, or soft wood tones can all provide beautiful texture without stealing the spotlight.
4. Versatility Within the Space
One location, multiple looks, that’s the goal. I scout for spaces that offer a variety of settings within one area: think kitchen + living room + outdoor space. This way, we can capture a full, dynamic gallery without needing to change locations.
5. Privacy + Comfort
Posing can feel vulnerable sometimes, especially if you’re not used to being in front of the camera. I look for locations that allow us to shoot without distractions or an audience so you can relax, be yourself, and shine.
6. Accessibility + Logistics
Easy parking, nearby washrooms, and enough room for wardrobe changes or props? Yes please. These little details can make a shoot feel effortless (or chaotic), so I always check them in advance.
Location matters, and I’ve got you covered.
Scouting the right spot isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s about creating a space where you feel confident and where your brand story comes to life. That’s why I never leave it to chance. Whether we’re shooting in your home, a rented studio, or a dreamy outdoor setting, I’ll make sure we’re in the perfect place for you.
Have a favorite spot in mind for your brand session? I’d love to hear about it!
